All the below are some frequently used words used by Muslims – they are originally Arabic but are used world-wide and we need to understand their meaning:
| Halal | ‘permissible’ under Islam (and not just food!) |
| Haraam | ‘forbidden’ by God |
| Ummah | the ‘community’ of Muslim believers |
| Dawah | ‘invitation’, missionary work for Islam |
| Shariah | ‘way or path’, the body of Islamic law |
| Hadith | ‘sayings’ (usually of Mohammed), secondary source of teaching after Qu’ran |
| Imam | religious scholar who leads prayers |
| Khutba | sermon delivered on Friday |
| Khatib | deliverer of sermon |
| Hijab | ‘cover or veil’ |
| In Sha Allah | ‘if God wills’ |
