First of all, don't confuse learning about Islam with learning about Muslims, these are two different things completely. If we are going to reach out to Muslims in love it is important to have a good idea of their beliefs and practices, however that may not be the most important thing.
Most people reach straight away for a textbook on Islam and are eventually surprised that the theory seldom matches the practice.
Have a look at the information about Orthodox Islam but take more time to read what ordinary Muslims believe. Around 80% of Muslims practice what we call Popular or Folk Islam and a lot of it can't be found in the Qu'ran.
It is perhaps more important in the early stages of reaching out in love to Muslims to not get into debates about belief and practices that are normally fruitless and benefit nobody. Spend time with them and find out about Muslim culture and how to treat them with respect. Ordinary Muslims feel unjustly picked on by the non-Muslim community and you will really need to earn their trust. In time you will discover that Muslim hospitality is second to none.
